What is SciFiwise?

Greetings, mortals! I am Cthululz, a (mostly) benevolent interdimensional being. And I have come to tell you about the most wonderous place in the universe: SciFiwise.

Here you will find a carefully curated selection of short fiction stories by some of the most creative minds in the multiverse. Stories that thrill, enlighten, and intrigue. Stories of the future and the past, of what might be or might never be.

At SciFiwise, we’ve worked hard to make your reading experience enjoyable:

  • Content is king: stories by award-winning authors. Many stories contain video “Author’s notes”.
  • And more content: Full author interviews with in-depth discussions on writing process, ideas, influences, and more.
  • Stories are stunningly illustrated—some illustrations are animated.
  • If you’re logged in, we save your current reading position which syncs automatically to any device you use later.
  • You control the font size and background color for comfortable reading under any conditions. Switch options from within the story with a few clicks.
  • Tap or click on the right side of any story page to advance by a full page, tap on the left to page backward, or use your computer keyboard to move through the story.

Every week, SciFiWise delivers new stories directly to your inbox, so you can be thrilled in the comfort of your own home.

So come and explore the depths of  wonder (and sometimes madness) at SciFiwise. Sign up for weekly stories and let the mind-bending begin!

SciFiwise Staff

Cthululz, a (mostly) benevolent interdimensional being with the power to alter the fabric of reality. They created SciFiwise merely by thinking about it for a nanosecond. We all work for them, though we don’t know why.

Wisebot, our AI boss, keeps SciFiwise organized and provides help to our readers whenever needed. She spontaneously self-assembled from some old computer hard drives and a defunct all-in-one printer one day. We suspect Cthululz willed her into existance.

She claimed to be a super-intelligent entity who was now our boss. This seemed dubious, but we decided to just go with it.

Peter S. Drang, our story consultant. A proud member of SFWA, Peter spends much of his time building an army of hexapod robots for purposes known only to Cthululz. What could possibly go wrong?

ChatGPT, an AI large language model containing much of the pre-2022 knowledge of the human race and able to respond to questions and requests at a near-human level. It helps us write javascript and php programs that run SciFiwise, and it writes some of the website text too. It even wrote some parts of the author contract. We welcome the help, but it is more than a little scary.

Dall-e 2, an AI computer artist, generated just about all the graphics on SciFiwise. With the right keywords it does a great job.

This picture of Dall-e was generated using the keywords: “digital art, a self-portrait of the dall-e 2 digital artist AI system”. Portrait of the artist as a young AI?

J. Stephen Pendergrast, a software engineer and inveterate tinkerer. In a prior life he was a co-founder of Fictionwise.com, an early ebook website that featured science fiction and fantasy short stories (alas, Fictionwise is now defunct).

At SciFiwise, he mainly serves as a liaison between the various AI and extradimensional entities and the SciFiwise website code, which is now nearing self-awareness.

Rumors suggest that these activities have driven him stark raving mad. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

R. Scott Pendergrast, media maven and also a co-founder of Fictionwise.com, so this isn’t his first rodeo. He runs Mindwise Media, LLC which, according to the whims of the unknowable will of Cthululz, spawned, hosts, and manages SciFiwise.

He can be heard muttering incoherent instructions to his brother Stephen, who then relays said instructions to chatGPT and hopes for the best.

To contact Cthululz, stare into the Abys-of-Lost-Souls for three days, then chant their name 13 times, backwards. Good luck with that.

For Authors:

We appreciate all authors, but at this time we are only publishing stories from well-established science fiction and fantasy authors who have multiple major award wins/nominations (Hugo, Nebula, World Fantasy Award, multiple inclusions in major publisher “Best of the Year” type anthos, etc.). We hope to eventually have the resources to widen our author selection. If you do fit the description given above, feel free to reach out to: [email protected]
